Old Fullerians 6-3 Sun Postal Sports

Old Fullerians picked up their first victory of the campaign against early season strugglers Sun Postal at Barton Way. The visitors started with nine men due to the delayed arrival of the their striking partnership but Fullers found it hard to get going. There were lots of sloppy passes and lapses in concentration but the hosts finally made their numerical advantage pay on ten minutes, just as the latecomers were getting ready to join the action. Joe Rylett made good ground down the right wing and pulled the ball back for strike partner Ben Williams to make amends for an earlier horror miss by burying the chance from close range. A second goal followed shortly afterwards as skipper Martin Donnelly celebrated his impending nuptials with a volleyed finish after his original effort had been saved. However Sun Postal got back in the game quickly when some hesitant defending and good interplay between the Hakner brothers left a one on one opportunity that was tidily finished. The visitors were visibly buoyed by this lifeline but their comeback was to be shortlived. A mazy dribble by schoolboy Jake Rainsford (on his full debut) ended with a simple pass to player-manager Jimmy Phang who shot low in to the bottom left corner, but unfortunately injured himself in the process.

At half time the focus was very much on coming out of the blocks strongly and ensuring that the crucial next goal would go the way of the home side. Fullers were determined not to let a comfortable lead slip as it had done the previous week and began to move the ball around a lot better. At the same time the defence kept things reasonably quiet with sweeper Sam Berry to the fore. It took Fullers a while but midway through the half they seemed to step up a gear and found the net three times in close succession to kill off the match. Firstly Ben Williams added his second after more good work from Joe Rylett before the roles were reversed with Rylett slamming home from a tight angle after his initial effort was saved. Then top scorer Williams completed his hat trick with a poachers finish after a clever pass from sub Shan Leung. Chances came and went for Fullers to add to the score but Sun Postal showed how it should be done when they added two late consolations despite having very few clear sights of goals.

A routine win for Fullers but could and maybe should have been by a wider margin. Plenty of encouragement to take into forthcoming matches where boss Phang will be looking to utilise his squad to full effect.

Team: Dan Graham, Anamul Hassan, Jimmy Phang, Phil Samuels, Phil Seidler, Sam Berry, Martin Donnelly, Jacob Rainsford, Joe Rylett, Ben Williams, Joe Blackwell. Subs – Niall Leung, Shan Leung

Old Fullerians 3-3 Europcar

After a stop start pre-season, Old Fullerians AFC may look back next May and be pleased with a point from their opening game of the new campaign. On paper it was always going to be a tricky first fixture against a rejuvenated Europcar team that have picked up a number of new players from last years Premier division.

It was an extremely bright opening from the home side, dominating all over the park. Some decent work down the left flank from the uncompromising Jimmy Phang led to the first goal, which was neatly taken by Ben Williams on his less confident left foot.

Soon after that some intricate passing in midfield involving Martin Donnelly and Joe Rylett led to a scrambled finish from Williams, putting Fullers well in control of the game.

Fullers had the better of the exchanges for the rest of the first half and as the half time whistle blew, Europcar were lucky to still be in the match.

The next goal was always going to be crucial and it was the visitors that deservedly pulled one back. A useful run and cross from the right midfielder was accurately despatched by the striker into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.

10 minutes later a controversial penalty decision was given to the home side, which was subsequently tucked away with ice-cold coolness from Joe Rylett. At that point Fullers felt that they had done enough to win the game.

To the visitors credit, they didn’t give up and starting piling on the pressure hoping to get back into the game. Another towering leap from the Europcar striker led to another headed goal and brought the visitors back into contention with 10 minutes of the match to spare.

Despite chances at both ends it was Europcar that put the ball into the net to level the match at 3-3. A draw was probably a fair result.

Team: Dan Graham, Sam Berry, Anamul Hassan, Phil Samuels, Eric Johnstone, Phil Seidler, Martin Donnelly, Jimmy Phang, Joe Rylett, Ben Williams. Subs – Jacob Rainsford, Oliver Miller, Lee Chamberlain

Goal summary:

10 min - Ben Williams

65 min - Joe Rylett

Old Fullerians 2-2 Langleybury CC

Old Fullerians remain unbeaten this season with a 2-2 draw with Langleybury.  OFs who were missing 6 first team regulars fielded a youthful side who showed great spirit all over the park and were on top for much of the game. OFs started the much better side playing decent football and not giving the opposition any time on the ball, this early spell of dominance was rewarded by well taken goal from Shan Leung after a mazy run from Jake Rainsford. Rainsford picked the ball up just inside the opposition half and proceeded to beat several players before entering the box, squaring it to Leung who neatly tucked it away in the bottom corner. OFs didn’t sit back and kept pressing Langleybury who kept making mistakes and bickering like teenage girls all over the pitch; it was clear that the Leung brothers owned the midfield not giving the opposition a sniff. However, Langleybury were offered a lifeline just before half time when a long through ball wasn’t dealt with by the defence allowing the Langleybury striker through on goal; he rounded Grahame and tucked the ball in the unguarded net.

The second half got underway with OFs once again on the front foot with the Leung brothers carrying on where they left off with Scott John being a useful outlet on the left wing. OFs dominance was once again rewarded with a goal, this time it started with Scott John on the left playing Ben Williams in who set Joe Rylett up for a neat finish, a decent team goal made with some intelligent passing moves to beat the Langleybury defence. Langleybury kept pressing and utilised the wings well but the defensive trio of Stoker, Samuels and Hassan were up to the challenge and fended the advances off. Unfortunately Stoker was forced off due to an injury and OFs down to the barebones could not replace him so played the final 10 minutes with 10 men. A sloppy challenge bought about a free kick to Langleybury which was curled into the top corner and bought the scores level once again. OFs stood firm and closed the game out and a share of the points.

OFs would be slightly disappointed to miss out on all the points but it was a great performance nevertheless including three solid debuts by JP Stoker, Scott John and keeper turned right winger, Adam Bunyan. The boss, Jimmy ‘DVD’ Phang, can only be pleased with the performance and the spirit showed by everyone on the park…good signs for the rest season.

Team: Dan Graham, Oliver Miller, Scott John, Phil Samuels, Jean-Philippe Stoker, Anamul Hassan, Niall Leung, Shan Leung, Ben Williams, Joe Rylett, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Adam Bunyan.

Goal summary:

10 min - Shan Leung
Jacob Rainsford's mazy dribble ended with a shot parried by the keeper and Shan Leung slightly scuffed it over the line from close range.

60 min - Joe Rylett
A great team goal, finished off by Joe Rylett with a right footed conversion from close range, following a Ben Williams pass.

October 2, 2011 – Watford Sunday League, Turner Trophies Challenge Cup, Round 1

Victoria 1-3 Fullerians

On a blisteringly hot Sunday morning, Old Fullerians travelled the short distance to Queens School looking to take their unbeaten league run into the cup against higher division opposition. The match started off evenly with both teams looking to play the ball on the ground. Victoria started to use the big pitch to their advantage but the Fuller's back three held their own, ably assisted by the wing backs of Tom Kinsey and Scott John who themselves provided good attacking width. Adam Bunyan provided a few scary moments in goal which showed a bit of rustiness in 11-a-side football over recent years. With Sam Berry providing an outlet from the back, Fullers started to push forward a bit more. The youthful legs of the Leung brothers and school boy Jake Rainsford started to take control of the midfield and pushed the opposition back, helped by the willingness of strike duo Ben Williams and Joe Rylett to open the game up by their movement down the sides. Half time score of 0-0 was a fair reflection on the shift put in by the away team.

The second half started off as a cagey affair with both teams again cancelling each other out. With space opening up, Niall Leung and Jake Rainsford found more room to run into and the opposition resorted to some robust tackling to stop them. Martin Donnelly and Joe Blackwell came on to provide something different as still both defences were on top. The deadlock was finally broken by a unfortunate piece of mistake. A long ball from Victoria was seemingly going to be cut out by the covering Rambo Hassan however he somehow managed to slice the ball to the path of the home striker who had a clear run on goal and tucked away the opportunity.

Fullerians now were chasing the ball in the sweltering heat. Instead of getting dishearten, Fullers still continued to play their game and debutante Joe McHenry came on to help provide some more attacking options. This paid dividends when some good play down the right wing resulted in striker Rylett having a shot at goal. The home keeper could only parry the ball back in to play and like any good striker, Ben Williams pounced to tuck away the equaliser. The memento was changing and soon after the second goal came along. Jake Rainsford delivered a perfect corner which Williams charged on to with an unstoppable header to claim his second goal. Fullers not resting on to their laurels still continued to push on whenever possible. This was evident when Rainsford had one of his now trademark runs at the home defence. After entering the home team's penalty area, he was unlawfully brought down and provided an easy decision for the referee. Joe Rylett tucked away the resulting penalty to finally take the game away from Victoria.

Fullerians fully deserved their win against higher opposition due to their incredible work-rate and never say die approach. With this commitment they can easily find themselves in top echelons of the league table. As a result of this gutsy performance, Fullerians have now been rewarded with a home time against Premier Division Bushey FC in the next round, who last season only finished behind the big two of Oakview and St Joes.

Team: Adam Bunyan, Tom Kinsey, Scott John, Anamul Hassan, Phil Samuels, Sam Berry, Shan Leung, Niall Leung, Ben Williams, Joe Rylett, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Joe Blackwell, Martin Donnelly, Joe McHenry

Goal summary:

75 min - Ben Williams

October 9, 2011 – Watford Sunday League, League Intermediate Cup, Round 1

Old Fullerians 1-5 Chorleywood Club

Old Fullerians, buoyed by their own recent success in the cup, took on Chorleywood Club, who were topping the league with an impressive start to the season. With several players from last week missing, the Fullers side underwent some chopping and changing, but come kick off a strong team took to the field. Both teams started the game well, knocking the ball about, but it was Chorleywood Club who early on, quite unexpectedly took the lead. A kick from hand from the keeper was missed by the opposition striker, which put the Fullers defence into chaos. The ball was picked up and two or three Fullers challenges were missed and it was left simply for the striker to pass the ball into the net passed the stranded Adam Bunyan in goal.

Two Chorleywood goals followed in close succession, both a combination of some soft defending across the field and undoubtedly the very bouncy new ball! Fullers had been playing well and had chances themselves, with Jake Rainsford pulling the strings in the middle and Jimmy Phang and Joe McHenry putting a shift on down the wings, which had created openings for both them and Ben Williams and Joe Rylett who were leading the attack. However at half time Fullers went in 3-0 down.

The second half came and Fullers, with a never say die attitude, were firing on all cylinders, yet it just wasn’t coming off for them. Phil Samuels, Rambo and Sam Berry in defence were providing a good outlet for the ball and Fullers goal came eventually through Joe Rylett after a through ball from player-manager Phang. Some impressive sub performances were made and Fullers were giving their all, but it didn’t stop more of the same, with the opposition scoring another two.

A few positives can be taken from the game, but overall the whole package wasn’t there and the players should be disappointed. Fullers will have to up their effort if they want to compete against Chorleywood in the league, which they should be.

Team: Adam Bunyan, Joe McHenry, Anamul Hassan, Phil Samuels, Sam Berry, Jimmy Phang, Tom Kinsey, Joe Blackwell, Ben Williams, Joe Rylett, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Andrew Spry, Miki Signorini.

Goal summary:

55 min - Joe Rylett
Jimmy Phang supplied the through-ball, and Joe Rylett found the net from just inside the box with a clinical right footed effort.

October 16, 2011 – Watford Sunday League, Division 2

AFC Spartians 2-2 Old Fullerians

Old Fullerians travelled to AFC Spartians, the visitors looking to continue their unbeaten league run and their hosts looking for another thumping victory to add to the previous weeks. Both sides started positively with much of the play in the middle of the park with the midfields in close battle. This meant few clear cut chances being created by either side. The deadlock was broken by some sluggish Fullerians defending not clearing the ball with the Spartians striker seizing the opportunity and slotting the ball in the back of the net. After a promising start the away side tailed off with sloppy passes being made all over the park and the home team started having much more of the ball. Visiting keeper Dan Grahame was called upon to pull off some regulation saves to keep the strikers at bay. Unfortunately for Fullerians it was another mistake at the back which led to the second goal, yet again paying the price for some lax defending. The visitor’s defensive rock Sam Berry was then forced off with a back injury, to be replaced by Scott John who slotted in nicely on the left side. The first half finished with Spartians much the better side and possibly should have been 3 up with a golden opportunity when one of the strikers beat the offside trap but could only shoot wide with Grahame charging out at him.

With a stern talking to at half time Fullerians changed formation slightly and knew they had to be first out the blocks in the second half to get themselves back into the game. Schoolboy Jake Rainsford slotted into the centre of midfield alongside Tom Kinsey and Niall Leung was pushed up top with Joe Rylett. The visitors certainly started the better side with them winning almost everything in the midfield, Kinsey at the heart of this. The wings became much better attacking outlets with a probing Scott John pushing forward to support Martin Donnelly and Perry Knight was a great outlet on the right linking up well with Rainsford and Rambo Hassan. With the away midfield winning almost everything the hosts resorted to the long ball which Phil Samuels and Jimmy 'Jackie Chan' Phang managed to head and karate kick away respectively. The breakthrough came for Fullerians with a free kick from Phang aimed across field. Kinsey then headed it across to the back post where Knight slotted home for a well taken goal on his debut. The visitors now had a second wind and did not let up on a now fragile Spartians defence which seemed in disarray from the pressure they were under. A golden opportunity to level the game fell to Niall Leung who was put through one on one with the keeper only for him to screw it wide with his weaker left foot. Nevertheless Fullerians pushed on and with 8 minutes left the equaliser came, a cross stuck into the box after a short corner created a good old goal line scramble which ended up with the ball in the back of the net courtesy of a Spartans player. In the final minutes of the game the away defence stood firm and created what would have been the winner, as a mesmerising run from Rambo Hassan all the way up the right channel ended with a perfect ball across the face of goal but it was agonisingly out of reach for the charging Leung. Two minutes later the final whistle blew and honours were even.

This really was a game of two halves, Fullerians didn't really turn up in the first half and Spartans didn't capitalise when they were on top. Then a super second half by the visitors piled on the pressure their hosts who didn't know how to deal with it and maybe in the end Fullerians were the most disappointed not to get the full 3 points.

Team: Dan Grahame, Anamul Hassan, Jimmy Phang, Phil Samuels, Sam Berry, Tom Kinsey, Perry Knight, Niall Leung, Joe Rylett, Jacob Rainsford, Martin Donnelly. Sub – Scott John.

Goal summary:

65 min - Perry Knight
A floated free kick was headed down by Tom Kinsey into the path of Perry Knight who took one touch to control and another to dispatch emphatically into the net.

82 min - O.G.
Tom Kinsey headed goal wards from a corner and the attempted clearance from a defender ricocheted off a team mate for an unfortunate own goal.

October 23, 2011 - Herts Intermediate Cup, Round 2

Greenacres II 0-1 Old Fullerians

A patched up Old Fullerians side narrowly overcame Hemel based Greenacres in the Herts Intermediate cup on Sunday. On a narrow and bumpy pitch it was not a game for the purists but one in which the visitors just about earned their path through to the next round. In the first half there was very little created as the conditions contributed to a messy opening period. Fullers had the better of the play, with right back Olly Miller particularly prominent going forward, but only created a series of half chances which seemed to be magnetically drawn straight to the Greenacres keeper. The hosts created almost nothing before the break, but the sides went in level at the interval.

In the second half the home side woke up and veteran keeper Kev Warren made a good scrambling stop after being a virtual spectator for the first 45 minutes. However, again it was Fullers who had more of the possession and it was no surprise when they finally took the lead. Shan Leung surged forward from the left wing and as the defence backed off he drilled a precise shot low into the bottom right corner to notch his second of the season. The visitors came close to doubling their advantage when 44 year old Simon Ware nearly marked his return from retirement with a firm header from a corner that was clawed away by the hosts’ keeper. Top scorer Ben Williams pounced on the rebound but slotted just the wrong side of the post. With one goal in it the home side pushed forward some big men in the closing minutes and this did create a bit more uncertainty in the Fullers backline. Kev Warren did well to push a free kick onto the bar but otherwise Greenacres did a lot of huffing and puffing without creating much else. Fullers held on for a rare clean sheet to ensure a local derby in the next round against Olympian League side Rickmansworth Athletic.

Team: Kevin Warren, Oliver Miller, Anamul Hassan, Eric Johnstone, Phil Samuels, Tom Kinsey, Perry Knight, Niall Leung, Simon Ware, Ben Williams, Shan Leung. Sub – Miki Signorini.

Goal summary:

60 min - Shan Leung
A solo goal by Shan Leung, scored from 12 yards out with the left foot.

October 30, 2011 - Watford Sunday League, Division 2

Chorleywood Club 1-2 Old Fullerians

All the players turned up looking bright and ready to go after their extra hour in bed, with the slight exception of the Captain and Kit man who made a slightly later entry. The team was up for this game and we knew all about the opposition after our cup game a few weeks ago where the 5-1 score line flattered the opposition.

The first half was a real testament to how much Fullerians have developed over the past few months, a new look back 4 looked sharp and managed “the big lad” well. Phil Samuels would have been a MOM contender if he lasted, Jimmy Phang gave a managers performance and set the tempo with some good tackles and some great long range passing. The ref was letting the game flow and a few tackles were flying in from Chorleywood, but this did not faze the team and they kept the tempo high. The midfield was energetic and pressed the ball well putting Chorleywood under good pressure. The experience up front showed as well keeping their back line busy and allowing the whole team to really impose themselves.

The first half was a real battle with neither team really having any clear cut advantages and the teams went in 0-0. Big Kev gave the half time talk, due to Jimmy needing valuable oxygen. However as he rightly said DG had not made one save that half, we had dominated most of the possession, played good football in patches and looked in control. The one element we needed now was a bit of belief!!

The second half saw Fullerians start brightly, and the midfield picked up where they left off, with Jake leading the way with some great runs really attacking and stretching the Chorleywood defence. Chorleywood only had one answer and that was to try to hack him down at every opportunity. The continued pressure had to pay in the end and again it was 5 minutes of magic from Jake that changed the game. Firstly, a run through midfield to the touchline before beating another two players for good measure and delivering a great pass to Rylett for a clean finish from 6 yards.

Our tails were up!!! 5 minutes later another run by Jake opened up the defence, he found Perry on the right who delivered a pin point cross for Williams to tuck away nicely with his head 2-0. The last 20 minutes saw the inevitable fight back by Chorleywood. The made a few changes and put the Fullerians defence under some pressure, which they managed well. Unfortunately the clean sheet went begging. From a poor corner, the ball found its way through the legs of the front post defender to a Chorleywood man who had a two yard tap in.

The whole team dug in and battled to the end for a good result and a well-earned three points. Cup next week – easy game against Bushey!!

Team: Dan Grahame, Anamul Hassan, Martin Donnelly, Phil Samuels, Jimmy Phang, Niall Leung, Perry Knight, Joe Blackwell. Joe Rylett, Ben Williams, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Phil Seidler, Sam Styles, Miki Signorini.

Goal summary:

65 min - Joe Rylett
Jacob Rainsford supplied the cross after a dazzling run, and Joe Rylett found the net from six yards out with a well-finished right footed effort.

70 min - Ben Williams
Ben Williams fired home from close range with a well-finished headed goal, following an excellent passing move and a cross from Perry Knight.

November 6, 2011 - Watford Sunday League, Turner Trophies Challenge Cup, Round 2

Old Fullerians 4-6 Bushey

Old Fullerians were left wondering what could have been as 15 minutes of madness after half-time cost them the chance to beat Premier League leaders Bushey FC and progress to the next round of the Challenge Cup.

Fullers started very strongly playing with a quick tempo and shutting the Bushey players down early giving them no time on the ball to play. Most of the early action was in the Bushey half as Fullerians pushed hard for the opening goal, it came when good work from Jake on the left saw him cut inside and play a ball into the path of the onrushing Joe Blackwell who slotted the ball past the keeper and in off the post. It wasn't long before Fullers pressure meant they extended their lead and a throw in down the left hand side near the area fell to Joe Rylett who hooked it across the goal for Niall to beat the keeper from close range. Bushey looked shocked but started to come into the game more and began to create some chances themselves, but the Fullerians defence were not going to let them through easily and defended well against the pacey Bushey forward line. On the occasions that Bushey managed to beat the defence in the first half they couldn't beat Adam Bunyan in goal who pulled off some good saves and Fullers went into the break fully deserving their lead.

The half-time team talk focused on not conceding anything in the first 15 minutes and pushing hard to get what we hoped would be the decisive third goal. Unfortunately this didn't happen and instead a sloppy 15 minutes and some debatable refereeing decisions meant that Bushey were able to score 3 times and then take a 4-2 lead not long after that. However Fullers fought back and were by no means out of the game and pulled it back to 4-3 when Joe Blackwell slotted a ball into Ben Williams' path and he put it past the keeper. The equaliser came from a fired up Tom Kinsey. Tom was fired up because of an injustice where he was accused of stamping on a player and was head butted himself and a bit of barney occurred. However only Tom was booked and he had almost got away with it but spurred on by his quest for justice he couldn't help but tell the ref his side of the story - and he couldn't have liked it much as he showed Tom a yellow card. Anyway the goal came from an assist by Joe Rylett on the right and Tom headed home from close range.

Fullers now were back on top of the game but Bushey, against the run of play, managed to find another goal to lead 5-4 with around 10 minutes left. Fullers created more chances to equalise again and Jimmy Phang went close with a header just wide of the post and sub Perry Knight hit a fantastic shot which came back off the crossbar. As Fullerians pushed for the goal Bushey broke away and scored a 6th which confirmed their win.

A disappointing result, but there were a number of positives to come out of this game. The first half was one of the best performances of the season so far which showed what we are capable of and that we also put 4 goals past the team at the top of the Premier League who had only conceded 7 all season before this game.

Team: Adam Bunyan, Sam Berry, Martin Donnelly, Eric Johnstone, Jimmy Phang, Niall Leung, Joe Blackwell, Tom Kinsey, Joe Rylett, Ben Williams, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Phil Seidler, Perry Knight.

Goal summary:

10 min - Joe Blackwell
Good work from Jake on the left as he cut inside and played in Joe making a breaking run from midfield and he slotted it in off the post.

15 min - Niall Leung
A throw-in down the left found its way to Joe Rylett who hooked it across goal for Niall Leung to stab in from close range.

65 min - Ben Williams
Joe Blackwell collected the ball in their half and played in Ben Williams who shot across the keeper with his left.

70 min - Tom Kinsey
Joe Rylett crossed and Tom Kinsey headed home.

November 13, 2011 - Watford Sunday League, Division 2

Europcar 2-2 Old Fullerians

A clash of two unbeaten sides awaited the fans on this mild November morning. Fullers were after revenge having thrown away a two goal lead to Europcar earlier in the season. A slightly rearranged team in the absence of player manager Jimmy Phang saw Joe Blackwell move to right back and Niall Leung restored to his more favoured centre midfield.

The match began at an exciting pace with Fullers quickly establishing control and troubling the home team with the pace of their attacks.

For all the pretty football the opening goal took just three touches from a Fullers goal kick to the back of the net. Tom Kinsey rose well to highlight his dominance in the air, flick the ball on and Joe Rylett was as ever waiting on the last defender to show great strength to squirm the ball into the back of the net.

The first half continued in a similar pattern with Europcar restricted to speculative efforts from outside the area and little more action of note.

After recent memories of giving away leads early in the second half, the focus for Fullers was continuing to control the game. They did just that and some clever footwork by Jake Rainsford by the byline saw him ignore the calls of those waiting for a pullback and smash the ball into the back of the net, a great individual goal.

Now 2 behind Europcar committed more men forward and Fullers made some changes to counteract this. Just as the Fullers defence seemed to be heading for a clean sheet, a bit of misfortune led to a penalty. A high ball struck Eric Johnstone on the arm, which was positioned firmly by his side but the referee had made up his mind that it was a penalty. Suddenly it was 2-1 and memories of recent matches definitely began to take effect.

With mere minutes remaining a hopeful ball forward struck the Europcar striker on the arm but the referee inexplicably gave a free kick in favour of the home team. An awful decision which summed up his mornings work. It was a decision of huge circumstances as a resulting corner was bundled in amongst a scramble which included the Europcar keeper.

In the end Fullers continued their unbeaten start to the season against strong opposition but it is testament to the quality of the team that there was scenes of real disappointment not to have taken all three points.

Team: Sam Styles, Joe Blackwell, Martin Donnelly, Eric Johnstone, Sam Berry, Niall Leung, Perry Knight, Tom Kinsey, Joe Rylett, Ben Williams, Jacob Rainsford. Sub – Jimmy Phang, Scott John, Phil Seidler.

Goal summary:

November 20, 2011 - Herts Intermediate Cup, Round 3

Old Fullerians 1-0 Rickmansworth Athletic

Sunday 20th November saw Old Fullerians welcome Ricky Athletic to Barton Way for Round 2 of the County Cup. With weather conditions more synonymous with something from Tyneside, the referee deemed the visibility safe and play was underway on time. Fuller’s went into the game on the back of surrendering a two goal lead against unbeaten league rivals Europcar, but it seemed those were distant memories making the best of the first half possession. Despite a “thorough” warm up, the gaffer was forced to make an early change, Martin Donnelly falling foul of the cold weather. A slight re-shuffle at the back didn’t seem to phase the home side who adapted well, with Phil Seidler and Sam Berry orchestrating a sound back line.

With the ball spending most of it’s time above the fog in the first half, it was hard for Fullers to demonstrate their Barca esq passing capabilities, leaving the only real memorable highlights of the 45 to Sam “Bruce Lee” Styles for his acrobatical goal line clearance, and to early substitute Oliver Miller who, for want of a better word..clattered his opposite number, much to appreciation of the gaffer and the Paul Scholes school of tackling.

The second half saw Fullers pepper the opposition 18 yard line with deliveries, Ben Williams climbing high to look for his strike partner but time after time the ball would not break kindly and Ricky were able to clear in true Sunday League fashion. With extra time looming it seemed as though it was going to be one of those days, the majority of territory and possession but with nothing to show for it.

A quick turnaround saw the two teams line up for the first half of extra time. Niall Leung and Tom Kinsey who both magnificent throughout the 90 mins carried on where they left off, harassing the opposition and dominating the aerial battle. As the minutes ticked by, it was clear that there was only going to be one goal in this game.

Did Fullers have enough in the tank to steal something in the last 15 minutes? Time for fresh legs. The third and final substitution saw age and experience give way to what can only be described as raw pace and a dodgy tash. Miki Signorini burst past one player, then two, then three, just failing to play in the very vocal Rylett. The prospect of a penalty shootout was fast approaching. With Athletic’s keeper failing to clear the half way line with goal kicks, it was the ever-present Tom Kinsey who rose unmarked to guide a cushioned header in into the path of Ben Williams. A deft flick inside saw the ball fall square to the on rushing Niall Leung who drilled the ball convincingly passed the outstretched keeper. Scenes of celebration broke out as if the winner at Wembley had been tucked away – justice it seemed for Fullers. With little more than seconds of the game to go, surely there was no way back for Athletic? Shouts of “stick it in the corner” rang out from the touchline but the experienced Joe Rylett had other ideas, inviting a challenge from the opposing right back who was penalised for his efforts.

The referee took one look at his watch and signalled for full time – Fullerians showing promotion potential by winning ugly and marching into the third round.

Old Fullerians 2-6 AFC Spartians

Old Fullerians unbeaten league run came to a shuddering halt against league leaders AFC Spartians at Barton Way. There was a delayed start due to the failure of the council to set up the pitch or open the changing rooms.  But when they finally got going the home side had high hopes having held their opponents to a draw earlier in the season, and the early omens looked good. The visitors were missing a few through injury and Fullers got into them from the off. It wasn’t long before they took the lead as a fine move saw skipper Martin Donnelly’s through ball dummied by Joe Rylett before schoolboy Jake Rainsford smashed the ball high in the netless goal. Spartians struggled to make clear opportunities as Fullers worked hard to close them down all over the pitch. The hosts had the better of the first half but were unable to find the second goal that would have given them the cushion their early endeavours probably deserved.

However the second period was a very different story. As seems to be the case on a regular basis at the moment the home side struggled to keep up the momentum and sloppiness in important areas of the pitch began to cost them. A quickly taken corner caught Fullers napping and despite a goal line clearance from Rambo Hassan the loose ball was driven in the level up the scores. Very shortly afterwards Spartians took the lead as a quick break down their left led to a fine turn and finish from the centre forward. The hosts seemed shell shocked and soon their shape was gone. The league leaders suddenly found space where previously there was none and their obliging hosts kept giving them possession in dangerous areas of the pitch. One such careless pass led directly to a third for Spartians and it was game over when on another counter attack the home defence kept backing off and allowed a visiting midfielder to fire in off the post from the edge of the area. Fullers rallied briefly and were rewarded with a volleyed finish from Sam Berry after Jimmy Phang’s long free kick was allowed to bounce through to him.

That was not the end of the scoring though, and the visitors rubbed salt in to the wounds by adding two further wonder strikes from long range. The scoreline may have been a bit harsh on Fullers but they had a real chance to inflict some damage on the leading team in the division, and then blew it. It is to be hoped that lessons will be learned and that Fullers will be able to regroup and string together another decent unbeaten run to ensure they climb up the table.
